With Christmas just a week away it’s time to focus on the carols that we sing.

They are so familiar that we often just listen or sing without paying attention to the meaning behind the words. Let’s see what the hymn writers were trying to convey.

Forget about the melody; read these lyrics as statements of what God, through the hymn writers, wants to say to us.

O Come, O come, Emmanuel, verse 4: “O come, Desire of Nations bind in one the hearts of all mankind. Bid Thou our sad divisions cease, and be Thyself our King of Peace.”

It is sad that we are so divided. The hope of the hymn writer is that Jesus, the Desire of all people, will bind together the hearts and minds of people everywhere by His great love, becoming for us all the King of Peace.

He is the One true God; He seeks to rule over us as His one true people.

This Christmas, may we sing with hope that the peace of Christ will descend like a blanket upon the entire world and unite us by His love. Pastor Jim.
