II Corinthians 4: 4 says, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

Who is he? Who is the “god of this age” who has so blinded the minds of otherwise decent people who now remain ignorant of God’s grace.

Who is he? Is he Greed? Perhaps, but not all unbelievers are greedy. Is he Selfishness? Again, not all unbelievers are selfish. Is he Ignorance? Ah, we are perhaps getting closer, but I think Ignorance is only a cousin.

The god of this age? I believe his name is “Self-reliance.” It is “Self-reliance”, belief in one’s own ability to control destiny, that keeps the unbeliever from accepting God’s mercy.

“Self-reliance” tells us we can do it ourselves, with no help, but that only works until hard times come, then “Self-reliance” flies out the window, powerless and afraid.

Keep that in mind, the next time you think you can do it all by yourself. Remember who God really is. Pastor Jim.
