Today is Maundy Thursday and tonight many churches will acknowledge this with special services commemorating Jesus’ instituting the Last Supper.

While we may focus on that final meal, that’s not all that happened that night.

Later Jesus would go to the garden of Gethsemane, where He would pray to be relieved of His duty to sacrifice. He prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26: 39b).

Jesus knew what was expected of Him. He prayed to be released but, at the same time, acknowledged His desire to do God’s will for the benefit of others.

Sometimes we are called to do things that we really don’t want to do.

The next time you are faced with such a challenge it might be good to remember this prayer of Jesus and recognize His obedience.

Given His willingness to obey God, should we do any less? Pastor Jim.
