“You can count on me! I’ll be there for you,” your chum says, echoing the theme song of “Friends.” But will they be? Will they really be there when the chips are down–if you lose your job and come up short of mortgage money, or if you crash your car and need to borrow one, or even in the small crises of life, like when you suddenly need a sitter for that oh-so-difficult toddler of yours.

Will that pal really be there for you or is he/she merely a “fair weather” friend? Words are cheap; actions far more costly to the giver.

Proverbs 25:19 puts it quite succinctly: “Like a bad tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in the time of trouble.”

Keep that in mind the next time you promise to be there for someone, or they make that promise to you. Don’t be a bad tooth or a lame foot, by making a promise you cannot keep. Be a blessing instead, holding fast to your word. Pastor Jim.
